KENTUCKY JIM
The name “Kentucky Jim” first appeared as a surprise liner note from my old friend Charlie Chesterman—and it stuck like a catchy chorus. I hail from Sugartit, Kentucky (yes, it’s real—Google it), where my musical journey kicked off with a band and a full tank of gas. In 1986, I hit the road and eventually found a home in Boston’s legendary music scene, where I spent two unforgettable decades playing clubs, theaters, festivals, and just about any room with a stage. These days, I hang my hat in Washington, D.C., and keep the tunes rolling.
I’ve been the bass guy since I was 15, holding down the low end in bands big and small. While I dabble in a little bit of everything—especially a solo ukulele set that’s become a personal joy—upright bass is my true north. I switched to double bass about 20 years ago, and every gig still teaches me something new. It’s an instrument that keeps you humble, grounded, and grooving.
Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to play alongside an incredible cast of characters: the Bachelors of Art, Dave Sammarco Band, The Family Jewels, the LW with Chili Kurtz and Asa Brebner, and a long stretch with Charlie Chesterman & the Legendary Motorbikes. Each one shaped my sound and reminded me that music is as much about the people you play with as the notes you play.
These days, you’ll find me all over D.C.—on sidewalks, at farmer’s markets, in nightclubs—with my uke in hand or upright bass strapped in. I regularly play with; the Jelly Roll Mortals, The Grandsons, The Parklawn Ramblers, Ruthie and the Wranglers, Janine Wilson and all kinds of Bandhouse Gigs, continuing to chase the next great groove and the next good time.
New Releases
In addition to my band work, I’ve been diving deep into my solo artist side—writing, singing, and producing a new batch of original songs. I’ve been releasing singles throughout the year, and a full collection will come together as a debut solo album dropping this summer. It’s a mix of stories, humor, heart, and melody—songs shaped by a lifetime of playing, traveling, and listening.
Thanks for stopping by—take a listen to some tunes, join the mailing list, or follow along on social to see where I’m playing next. Let’s stay connected!
LIVE SHOWS
Catching me live is always a bit of an adventure—you never quite know where I’ll turn up, but you can count on a good time. One night, I might be on stage with a full band in a packed club, laying down grooves on the upright bass. The next day, you might find me strumming my ukulele at a street festival, farmers market, or even on a quiet sidewalk,. Whether it’s an intimate solo set or a foot-stomping show with the Jelly Roll Mortals or The Grandsons or a list of other fine performers, I aim to bring warmth, wit, and a whole lot of heart to every performance. Come say hi—I’m always glad to see a friendly face in the crowd.

The Bass Blog
Why bother with a blog anymore? I rarely read blogs anymore. I watch YouTube videos, I read Reddit posts, and I follow Instagram. But I don’t read blogs. So, why bother to write a blog if I don’t even bother to read anyone else’s blog?
Well, there is no good reason, other than most people I know or interact with are sick of listening to me talk about strings, actions, amps, effects, and so on, so I talk to myself here in the blog and who knows, maybe there may be some useful information for someone?
Wow recording has come such a long way in such a short time! Yup, I sound like an old guy again, the other day my son played me a solid […]
